Michele Alliot-Marie has been at the center of a political storm over her December vacation in Tunisia as popular protests there eventually led to the ouster of the former French colony’s longtime strongman.

The letter sent Sunday comes as Sarkozy was preparing a prime-time address to the nation as speculation swirled that a new Cabinet shake-up was in the offing - notably with Alliot-Marie said to be in the ejector seat.

A spokesman for Sarkozy’s office declined immediate comment about whether the president had accepted the resignation.
