The letter sent Sunday comes as Sarkozy was preparing a prime-time address to the nation as speculation swirled that a new Cabinet shake-up was in the offing - notably with Alliot-Marie said to be in the ejector seat.
A spokesman for Sarkozy’s office declined immediate comment about whether the president had accepted the resignation.
